Packing is one of the most stressful parts of moving to a new home. When preparing to transport fragile items, use the right materials and procedures to keep them safe and give yourself peace of mind.
Gather Materials First
The packing process will be easier if you assemble all the supplies you’ll need before you get started. Make sure that you have plenty of sturdy boxes and/or plastic containers in a variety of sizes, packing paper or newspaper, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, tape, and labels.
Select the Right Container
When packing fragile belongings, it’s critical to keep them from moving around inside the box or container. Any movement can increase the likelihood of damage. Choose a box or container that’s just a bit larger than what you’re going to place inside it. That will limit the amount of movement that’s possible.
Pack Fragile Items Carefully
Before you put fragile objects in boxes, wrap each item individually with packing paper, newspaper, or bubble wrap. That will reduce the chance that the object will get cracked, scratched, or chipped in transit. If you’re running low on paper or bubble wrap, you can use towels or blankets to wrap fragile items.
If you want to put a set of plates or bowls in a box, wrap each piece individually with paper or another type of protective material, then stack them in the box. If you’re packing one or more sculptures or ceramic items, wrap each separately, place the objects in the box, then fill any empty spaces with packing peanuts or crumpled-up paper.
When packing objects that are hollow, such as glasses or vases, fill them with paper to prevent damage. To keep glasses safe, wrap them individually, then pack them in the box they were in when you bought them, or use a box with cardboard dividers to keep them from touching each other.
Seal and Label Boxes
If you put fragile belongings in cardboard boxes, tape the boxes along the seams to prevent damage in transit. Clearly label any boxes or plastic containers that hold fragile items so movers can use extra caution when handling them. Write “fragile” on the top of each box or container and on all four sides.
